Candide Freeride World Champion 2010 !!!

For his first season on the Freeride World Tour, Candide Thovex could not have hoped for better… After surprising us all with a storming entry on the scene at Chamonix (even if we knew he was strong whatever the terrain), today he has reached the pinnacle of his freeriding career as he takes home the tour title in all its glory.

On paper he needed only to beat the excellent Henrik Windstedt (another skier sprouting from the world of freestyle) in today’s final stage in order to win the title. Nobody imagined that the 2 rivals would tie for 3rd place. (With Kaj Zachrisson in 1st and Aurelien Ducroz in 2nd place today).

But the maths has the final word; the rankings being based on the best 3 results of the 4 stages. Candide is World Champion, in front of Kaj Zachrisson and Henrik Windstedt!

Candide was making no compromises this morning in Verbier. By choosing the riskiest line and riding it with speed and ease, he proved that, well…there was really nothing left to prove. Ok, so he didn’t actually win the mythic Bec des Rosses, but a podium position on a first try (in fact it was the first time Candide had ever skied this face) is pretty good.

So the Freeride World Tour has a new champion, and no mistakes, the discipline as a whole has just taken a major kick up the backside.

All in all, a good day for the Frenchies, which also sees Xavier De la Rue making up for his Olympic plight and taking home the snowboarding title.

COREUPT.COM AT THE EUROPEAN X-GAMES TIGNES 2010

The adventure began well before the 10th of March for the CoreUPT.com staff. Work on the future CoreUPT.com stand took place on an unnamed building site somewhere near Lyon. Some of the staff spent a few days on site, bringing a personal touch to the 6 shipping containers, that were then transported to X-Fest village in Tignes for the first ever European X-Games.

The installation of the stand was nothing if not memorable! With the help of a 30 ton digger, the game was to carefully place and pile up said containers. Following that, various days were needed to set everything up on the inside and do the finishing touches (welding, electricity, waterproofing, staircase, decoration, stickers, installing the MINI Clubman…) All was finally finished around 2am Wednesday morning! Phew …

The finished CoreUPT.com stand boasted a presentation of the 2010/2011 ski collection, a CoreUPT.com video game specially created for the event in partnership with youriding.com, and a presentation area for the MINI Clubman. Also on show was Pull-In Underwear, another partner of ours.

The rest took care of itself. The riders arrived in good time (no plane delays this time) and managed to fit in various training sessions, both in the Valpark and on the X-Games features themselves.

And we all met up for a typically CoreUPT.com meal at the Couloir in Val Claret on Monday night (cheers Chris ;-) ).

During the X-Games, CoreUPT.com made a name for itself not only on the snow but on the after-hours scene. Thanks to a partnership with the Melting Pot, CoreUPT.com made this Tignes favourite its HQ throughout the event, and you were not shy in coming to party the nights away!

Between the various artists (Aya Waska, Urban Knights, Eliza Do Brazil…) and the premiere of Candide Kamera 2, we really got the place warmed up!

As far as the team goes, Canada was well represented by our 2 riders TJ SCHILLER and Justin DOREY, and all the Frenchies were in the house; Candide THOVEX, Adrien COIRIER, Richard PERMIN, Julien LANGE, Guerlain CHICHERIT,JL RATCHEL, Flo BASTIEN and Ben VALENTIN.

A special congratulations goes out to Julien LANGE for qualifying for his first X-Games. We wish him the best of luck for the future. We’re all with you Ju!

An equally BIG congrats to Justin DOREY for his 3rd place in the Superpipe, just behind the Frenchies Kevin Rolland (1st) and Xavier Bertoni (2nd).

A good performance was also put in by TJ SCHILLER who finished 4th in Slopestyle.

The CoreUPT.com team thanks all those of you who were able to visit us on the stand and share the adventure with us.

Here’s hoping that these 1st European X-Games have had as much of an impact on you as they have on us!

May the adventure continue …

FWT – Verbier postponed

The 17 skiers and snowboarders (out of 25) who competed in the Freeride World Tour final on the ‘face du Bec des Rosses’ in Verbier this weekend, are going to have to compete all over again; the weather window not being wide enough to get everyone through.

As far as the skiers are concerned, saturday’s runs will not count, since less than 2/3 of the skiers in the starting line-up were able to compete. Just one more skier’s run was needed to meet the two 3rds rule…… Neither Sverre liliequist, Candide Thovex, Tim Dutton, JT Holmes nor Jérémie Heitz were able to do their stuff.

If there is no break in the weather before next Sunday the 28th of March, the Xtrem de Verbier will be completely cancelled, and it’s the current Freeride World Tour rankings that will count. Henrik Windstedt will thus be crowned the winner.

If this final stage does take place, what might be the strategy of our Candide Thovex, on this somewhat intimidating face, where he does not appear completely at home?

Rumour has it he was planning a 360 off the ‘Voirol’. But a head to head with Guerlain Chicherit (before the cancellation) suggests otherwise. “No 360s … He was talking about it, but last night we decided to play it safe, to get to the bottom, and to earn points for the World Tour rankings. We’ve been working together quite a lot these last few days, and Candide wants to finish in the top 5, not necessarily go for a win. He has a really nice line planned, with loads of little quick jumps. He’s going to play with the terrain and do his ‘cat’ thing … assuming he’s got the legs to make it to the bottom. He’ll be in the main ‘couloir’ and will hit the ‘Voirol’ like everyone else, but he’ll also throw in a few tricks that no-one else has done before.”

Adrien Coirier took the 4th place in Squaw Valley

Just like last year, the impressive Tram Face (intended spot for the occasion) did not have the pleasure of being ripped up by the world’s best freeriders. It was on the ‘emergency’ Silverado face of Squaw Valley that this 3rd stage of the Freeride World Tour took place. Herrik Windstedt (who dropped in with a back flip) took home the title, followed up by Aurelien Ducroz and Reine Barkered.

This stage marked the comeback of the old schoolers (no judgement intended) who had been somewhat shaken up by the performances of Candide Thovex and Julien Lopez in the last 2 Chamonix stages. This time, Julien Lopez’s fall left him in 18th place, with Candide finishing 17th. Adrien Coirier, who had been told by doctors he would not ski this winter after his spectacular fall in Tignes, pulled off another good run and took home a well deserved 4th place.

Henrik takes the lead in the overall ranking, in front of Candide Thovex and Kaj Zackrisson, with Julien Lopez hot on their heels in 4th. Just a handful of points separate the leaders, so all will be decided at the fourth and final stage in Verbier (Switzerland) on the 20th of March.

Watch this space!

Itw and Candide’s line at FWT Chamonix

“I rather badly slept, I had an enormous pressure which did nothing but increase at the top of the face.I was not confident of my line and the snow conditions were very variable according to the places. Fortunately the “old locals”, Seb Michaud, Thomas Diet really helped me. I thus chose not to make tricks on my jumps and to privilege fluidity..

I had chance because in my line it was big powder snow. I am happy with this victory and to share the podium with my American buddy Tim Dutton who will be soon in Squaw Valley. I am very motivated for the next stages of the FWT.”

Candide THOVEX 2nd at the FWT stage in Chamonix

Today the second competition of the Freeride World Tour took place on the slopes of the north-east face of the Aiguille Pourrie in Chamonix, replacing the Nissan Russian Adventure (which had to be cancelled due to very bad weather conditions).
The frenchies turned out to be very good once again, as the podium is 100% French (1st Julien LOPEZ, 2nd Candide THOVEX, 3rd Seb MICHAUD as is Henrik WINDSTEDT). Thanks to his two places on the podiums, Candide has taken the lead of the general ranking. A very good performance which allows us to be totally hopeful for the future steps of the competition and which backs up his entry in the world of freeride.

On the other hand Richard PERMIN finishes at the 15th place and Adrien COIRIER at the 18th.

Congratulations to our team of riders and good luck for the next stages!

X-Games finals in Aspen

Enormous day for Frenchies today!!
After the victory of Candide in Chamonix, Kevin Roland and Xav Bertoni finish respectively 1st and 3rd at pipefinals of X-Games ! Congratulations to these 3 frenchies, they killed it today !

The X-cross final also took place today, on a long and very technical track.
Our Alsatian frenchy Xavier kuhn, who had finished 6th on the qualifs, did not take risks on this final not to be wounded before the Olympics Games of Vancouver.
This race was not an objective for him but more one drive to remain in race before Vancouver. He nevertheless showed that it was present during the runs of qualifiers.
Our Xav feels good so one goal :podium in Vancouver!!

On his side, our rider Justin Dorey did not let himself cut down by his nonqualication with the pipe finals and gains the silver medal in the category Best Tricks!

The coreUPT.com team thus sets out this year again with 2 medals at X-Games !

A huge BRAVO to our champions!!
